NTOTA is proud to be a supporter of FCD Belize and their Scarlet Macaw Program. The FCD Rangers monitor tens of thousands of acres of the Chiquibul Forest and protect a fragile population of Scarlet Macaws who use this area for breeding, hatching and rearing their chicks. This effort, with the collaboration and support of Dr. Isabelle Paquet-Durand with the care, rehabilitation, re-wilding and release of rescued chicks, this past year 40 chicks survived, fledged and joined the wild population of Scarlet Macaws. Without the dedicated work of these individuals, the Scarlet Macaw population of Belize would be moving toward extinction instead of away from extinction.

Despite these strides in a positive direction, however, the population is still not considered “safe.” The threats of poaching, loss of habitat and failure to thrive still pose imminent threats to this population of birds. That is why NTOTA plans on continuing our support. If you want more details, please view their full Annual Report 2025.
